Environmental protection depends on more than good intentions. It requires credible data, transparent reporting, strong regulation, and institutions that can act on evidence. In many communities, harmful environmental practices continue because pollution is poorly measured, underreported, or treated as a distant issue. Without localized data, policymakers may struggle to understand the scale of harm. Regulators may lack the evidence needed for enforcement. Communities may know they are affected, but find it difficult to prove the full impact. Breatha Policy and Accountability exists to bridge that evidence gap. Through this program, Breatha provides independent environmental monitoring, policy briefs, compliance insights, and data-backed recommendations that support stronger environmental governance and public accountability.
Agriculture depends on the environment. The quality of the air, soil, water, and climate conditions around farming communities can affect what is grown, how well it grows, and how safe it is for people to consume. Yet, farming communities are often exposed to environmental risks that are not properly monitored. Air pollution from bush burning, industrial activity, traffic emissions, gas flaring, waste burning, chemical use, and climate stress can affect crop quality, livestock health, soil conditions, and the well-being of farmers. BREATHE-AGRIC exists to connect environmental intelligence with agriculture and food security. Through this program, Breatha monitors environmental conditions in agricultural communities, supports climate-smart farming awareness, and generates data that can help protect farmers, food systems, and rural livelihoods.

Food security is not only about producing more food. It is also about protecting the environments where food is grown. When air pollution and climate stress affect farming communities, the impact can be serious. Crops may be exposed to harmful pollutants. Farmers may face respiratory and health risks from smoke, dust, fumes, and poor environmental conditions. Livestock may also be affected by heat, polluted air, and degraded surroundings. In many rural and peri-urban areas, these environmental pressures are not fully measured or documented. Farmers may experience the effects, but without data, it becomes difficult to understand the scale of the problem or advocate for support. BREATHE-AGRIC helps bring visibility to these risks.
01
Monitors Environmental Conditions in Farming Communities
Breatha deploys air quality and environmental monitoring tools in agricultural zones, rural communities, and peri-urban farming areas. This helps track pollution levels, climate-related conditions, and environmental risks that may affect farmers, crops, livestock, and surrounding communities.
02
Studies the Link Between Air Quality and Agricultural Productivity
BREATHE-AGRIC supports research into how pollution and climate stress influence food production, crop quality, livestock health, and farmer well-being. By connecting environmental data with agricultural realities, we help build evidence for better planning and support.
03
Supports Farmers with Environmental Health Awareness
Many farmers are exposed to smoke, dust, fumes, and chemicals as part of daily work. BREATHE-AGRIC provides practical education on exposure reduction, cleaner practices, and environmental protection. This may include awareness on bush burning, safe waste management, cleaner farming practices, and protecting health during high-exposure activities.
04
Promotes Climate-Smart and Cleaner Agricultural Practices
Breatha supports approaches that reduce environmental harm while strengthening resilience. This includes promoting cleaner, safer, and more sustainable practices that protect both farm productivity and community health. The program helps connect agricultural development with climate action, clean air, and rural well-being.
05
Generates Data for Food Security and Rural Environmental Planning
BREATHE-AGRIC produces insights that can support governments, NGOs, agricultural institutions, climate organizations, and development partners. This evidence can inform food security planning, rural health programs, climate adaptation strategies, and environmental protection for farming communities.
“I always burned my fields after harvest because everyone does it. Breatha showed me the air readings and explained what the smoke does to my lungs and to the soil. I have not burned since.”
Musa Abdullahi
Smallholder Farmer, Kaduna State, Nigeria
“BREATHE-AGRIC gave us the environmental data we were missing. Now when we advise farmers, we can tell them not just what to grow, but what the air and climate around them is actually doing.”
Grace Amoah
Agricultural Extension Officer, Brong-Ahafo, Ghana
