Kwame Mensah is a visionary technologist who bridges the gap between cutting-edge innovation and real-world impact in resource-limited settings. As Breatha’s Chief Technology Officer, he oversees the design, deployment, and maintenance of the organization’s proprietary sensor network — the largest air quality monitoring infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Before joining Breatha, Kwame spent six years at Google X (now X, the moonshot factory), where he was a lead engineer on Project Loon’s environmental sensing payload and later architected sensor networks for agricultural monitoring in Southeast Asia. His experience building systems that must operate reliably in extreme conditions with minimal maintenance directly informed Breatha’s approach to sensor deployment.
Kwame’s technical philosophy centers on “appropriate technology” — solutions that are not just technically excellent but culturally and economically sustainable. Under his leadership, Breatha developed the BreatheNode sensor platform, which costs 90% less than commercial alternatives while maintaining research-grade accuracy. The platform has been recognized by MIT Technology Review as one of the “10 Breakthrough Technologies for Global Health.”
He holds an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a BSc in Computer Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. He is also a frequent speaker at AfricaTech and CES on the topic of IoT for social good.
